Friday's post was about the deputation process. Today, I want to talk about an idea of means of support for a missionary were they not to "do deputation."This is a theoretical idea that I have here - not scriptural, but logical to me. What if the missionary's pattern was to work hard on finding 10 families on their mission field. The missionary goes and teaches them the gospel, baptizes the believers, and then teaches them to observe all things... like tithing. Were a missionary to find 10 families who would be obedient to God in all those steps, the missionary could be supported the equivalent salary as those to whom he is ministering.
I know, I know... we Americans couldn't live on the salary of some of the countries to where we go. We would need to have more than those people in order for us to live. Because we... well... um... we need more, right? I mean, because we're Americans we need more money to live on... um... huh.
Anyway, just another missionary thought

Perhaps a missionary could find 10 American families to give said 10% up and above their regular tithes - as in the "offerings" category- and then the missionary could then actually pay for their airline tickets, and the costs of setting up their home in the field- modest home I might add- close to the native peoples- as close as it could be that said missionary's wife wouldn't go crazy- and perhaps they could actually get to the field quicker and then go about finding those 10 families on the field. And maybe one of them... just maybe... might be called to pastor that church, and the missionary could move on.
What would happen if a farmer only planted one seed? What would happen if a missionary only planted one church?
Not saying your thoughts are bad. Definately not saying my thoughts are good. Glad I am the weaker vessel- and most glad that GOD is God!!
Andy, I really appreciate both of these postings a lot. There are some people that do this you know. I can provide some information to you about them if you are interested. Yes, they live in huts and eat rats, pigeon and whatever else it takes to be able to live there with their families. Yes, little children running around in the bush with Mom and Dad living with the people of the land.
...it really works.
You know, Mr Young made the reference to Ravenhill in the previous post and Ravenhill actually did travel all around England for 2 years after high school preaching the gospel, sleeping in churches that would open their doors and eating whatever was given to him. I believe that John Wesley did the same thing. If you haven't ever read "God's Smuggler" you should. Great book!
